Creating a safe environment for every Scout is the highest priority in Cub Scouting and Scouting America. SAFE Guarding Youth Training helps parents and leaders understand how to recognize concerns, maintain appropriate boundaries, and follow best practices that protect youth during all Scouting activities.
This training is designed to support volunteers — not test them — and helps ensure that every child has a safe and positive Scouting experience.
All registered leaders are required to complete this training annually, and parents are strongly encouraged to take it as well. The course is available online through my.Scouting.org and can be completed at your own pace.
Key Details:
Duration: ~90 minutes for the full course; 15-20 minute refresher courses are required annually thereafter.
Flexibility: The training can be paused and resumed at any time.

This training supports the Pack’s commitment to creating a safe and respectful environment for all youth and is required of all volunteers within units chartered by Catholic Churches. Volunteers learn best practices for appropriate boundaries, recognizing concerns, and promoting a culture of care within parish-based programs, including Scouts.

This short online training helps volunteers feel confident leading small-group den meetings and guiding Scouts through adventures and advancement. Leaders learn practical tools for managing a den, using program resources, and creating a fun, positive experience for Cub Scouts.

This training introduces the important behind-the-scenes role of supporting Pack operations and helping leaders succeed. Volunteers learn how the Pack is structured, how committee meetings function, and how adults work together to provide a strong Cub Scout program.

This training prepares volunteers to coordinate Pack leadership, guide program planning, and support a successful year of Scouting. Leaders learn how to manage Pack finances, lead annual planning, oversee charter renewal, and help the committee work effectively together.

This required safety training helps volunteers recognize weather risks and make informed decisions to keep Scouts safe during outdoor activities. Leaders learn how to prepare for changing conditions and follow Scouting guidelines when planning or participating in outdoor events.
Cubmasters, Assistant Cubmasters, and all Den Leaders take Hazardous Weather Training as part of their position-specific training requirement modules. The HWT module is the only one that expires and must be taken every 2 years to remain current. The HWT is optional for Pack Committee members and the Committee Chair, but is highly suggested.

Roundtable is a monthly gathering where local Scouting volunteers come together to share ideas, learn about upcoming events, and gain new resources for their Pack or den. These meetings help leaders stay informed, connected, and inspired throughout the year.
Topics may include: upcoming district events, advancement updates, meeting ideas, outdoor activities, and Pack planning support.
Great for both new and experienced leaders. All are welcome!
The Coastal District Roundtable is typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 7:00pm to 8:30pm at Northside Church, 2501 N College Road.
BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) prepares leaders to plan and lead safe, fun, and successful Cub Scout camping experiences. This hands-on training helps volunteers build confidence with outdoor skills, Pack camping policies, and family camping expectations.
🏕️ At least one BALOO-trained adult must be present for Pack overnighters and Cub Scout camping events.

Duration: BALOO includes an online prerequisite course followed by an in-person overnight training experience (1.5 days).
Modules cover: camping preparation, Cub Scout outdoor guidelines, campfire programs, meal planning, first aid, outdoor safety, and risk management.
Wood Badge is Scouting’s premier advanced leadership training for adult volunteers. This course helps leaders strengthen communication, team-building, problem-solving, and leadership skills that can be used in Scouting, work, and everyday life.
Wood Badge is open to all registered adult leaders who have completed basic training for their role. Participants who complete the course earn the traditional Wood Badge beads.

Duration: Wood Badge is offered over two weekends and includes both classroom learning and outdoor experiences.
Modules cover: team development, communication, problem-solving, conflict management, coaching, mentoring, and leading change.
University of Scouting and Pow Wow events offer leaders the chance to attend a variety of short training sessions on Scouting topics all in one day. These events are designed to help volunteers grow their skills, discover new ideas, and bring fresh energy back to their Pack. Leaders can choose the sessions that best match their interests and role.
Topics may include: ceremonies, games, advancement, camping, leadership, crafts, Pack administration, and program planning.
University of Scouting is not currently available through the Cape Fear Council.
